Lionsgate has teamed up with Samsung Galaxy to create the exclusive Virtual Reality (VR) experience, INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY. The opening day was on Friday, February 28th in SoHo and ScreenReels was invited. We couldn’t be there that day, and chose to check out the Flatiron location today instead. It’s quite hard to miss when you can see a pretty huge bus and people lining up, even in this freezing snow weather.

I was escorted to the futuristic leather chair and they explained what the Samsung gear VR does. I asked the instructor if this would be long, he smiled and said “It would take about 7 minutes, and I can’t tell you what you will see. Once you put the Samsung gear VR on, you can adjust, and give me a thumb up when you are good to go.” He also added, “You can feel it, too, from the chair.” Oh, he was absolutely right, it did shake, but it won’t make you fall off your chair, I promise.

To sum up the experience: By putting on the Gear VR headset, you are immersed in the role of a Divergent Member of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction, and are subjected to a series of mental “simulations” in order to determine the full extent of their divergence.

Max (played by Mekhi Phifer) was the first to greet me with a briefing about the test to see where I will go (Think The Sorting Hat in Harry Potter.) The white oculus visor on me felt bulky and heavy, but it was engrossing to move your head around to see everything. You can look straight, left or right and up the sky. Then Jeanine (Kate Winslet) stands right in front of you and looks coldly at you. Next, you are taken (supposedly) to the top of this building in Chicago. If you are afraid of heights, don’t look down. I, of course, looked right after I was told not to. However, I could  still see my feet dangling from my seat; really breaking the immersion. When you are checking out the VR space a lot of things just come out of nowhere, flying right to your face which of course, I ducked down by instinct. Then Max appears again to congratulate you. The characters kept popping left and right, so feel free to move your head around so you don’t miss anything.

Seven minutes went by quickly, and at the end you can have the video of your experience e-mailed to you. Since today is the last day of the tour in NYC, fans outside the tour markets will have an opportunity to view the experience on Samsung Gear VR over the weekend of March 7th-8th at select Best Buy® stores across the US.
