It is a sad day for fans of the Divergent series as the studio will be finalizing the franchise with a sigh rather than a bang. The final installment, Ascendant, will not be hitting movie theaters after all as Lionsgate has decided to wrap up the story in a made for TV movie. Seeing how the third installment, Allegiant, was a miss at the box office the studio seems to be reconsidering their strategy for the final installment.

Variety reports that “Lionsgate’s television group will handle production. The idea is to finalize the storylines involving the current cast and to introduce a new cast, who would then continue the series on either a traditional or streaming network.”

This will set up the franchise to continue a storyline on TV although it’s still unclear if stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, and others will return for the Ascendant television movie.

No deals are in place yet so as of now the future of Ascendant is up in the air so to speak. Could a Netflix original movie be an option? Seeing as Lionsgate TV has had success with Orange is the New Black that could also be a possibility.

Update:

According to THR only Shailene Woodley has been approached to join the TV version of Ascendant, but everything at this point speeds on what network moves forward with the project. “They haven’t come to us to discuss deals, but if they think they can skimp on actors options, they can think again,” said the rep of one of the co-stars.

Will update as more details are revealed.
